Neuromuscular Technique (NMT) also known as Trigger Point Therapy, is derived from Japanese Shiatsu massage and uses firm finger pressure to release trigger points. Myofascial trigger points manifest as small areas of tightness and heightened sensitivity within muscles. These create tight bands and tiny bumps or "knots" from the contracted muscle fibres which can be painful and may lead to a restricted range of motion or other sensations, such as tingling or numbness, in seemingly unrelated areas of the body.
Trigger point therapy stabilises neurological activity within the contracted muscles through direct pressure, to return them to normal function and maintain overall health.
Trigger points fall into two basic types - Active and Latent.
These cause muscular pain and may refer pain or sensation to other seemingly unrelated areas of the body.
These only cause pain when pressure is applied and do not refer pain to other areas. Latent trigger points may restrict range of motion and cause stiff joints.
